Notes
1891 census was the first time Catherine Simpson said she was a Widow. Therefore John died sometime before this. John Beck who married Catherine is the main mystery, they were both shown on the 1851 census as working as a quarryman at Porthgain Tip, Llanrian, Pembrokeshire. also shown is a possible named Catherine born abt 1850, but I have not found anything else about her, and she is not on any other census. Soon after 1851 they must have all moved to Kettering, probably because the railway was being built at the time, and John was shown as a railway contractor on his children's birth cert. As John was a contractor he was always away at the time of the other censuses and I have been unable to find any definite record of him since, over than he was always mentioned as the father on the birth certificates of the children. (c Ivor Watson) Regarding the 1851 census you state that Catherine is in Kettering at that time, I am unable to find her, any reference number? The reference to John & Catherine Beck at Porthgain, Penbrokeshire in the 1851 Census is correct because John William Becks was born there (Birth cert Attached), I did think it was Northgain originally, but after taking advice at the FRC in London I see it is Porthgain, I have since updated Genes Reunited. (c Ivor Watson) John Beck was a bit of a mystery, apart from the 1851 census he was never at home on the night of the Census, obviously as he was a contractor he was away working, but where was he? I have not been able to find a definate John Beck(s). (c Ivor Watson) Another mystery regarding Catherine is on Johns birth cert it shows Catherine's maiden name as Dewar, as it is on George Charles who was born in Glasgow, but on those born at Kettering she is shown as Simpson. I can not believe that it is two different persons, perhaps you can come up with a few ideas. Then there is Catherine, the first child on the 1851 census in Wales, I can find no birth or Death certificate for her, either in Wales or Scotland, and she is not with John & Catherine when they are in Kettering. (c Ivor Watson) John Beck married Catherine Dewar sometime before the birth of the first child, the only reference to a possible marriage is in North England, suggesting that John Beck was English but no birth or death certificate can be confirmed for him. I would suggest that sometime after the birth of George Charles Beck(s) the s was added to Beck. At the same time the wife of John appears as Catherine Simpson for the birth of the final two children. Did Catherine Dewar die in child birth or shortly after or was the s added to the name of Becks for John to remarry? (c Andrew Becks)
